Influence of “The Aeneid” and “Confessions” in Dante’s Poem
In his poem “The Inferno,” Dante narrates his experience through Hell and back. He tries to
recount the story in an autobiography form. Throughout the poem, Dante uses much of his
language, approach, and a message from Virgil. The Inferno talks about a visit to the dead as a
climactic episode at its center. At the beginning to the end, Dante narrates a journey through the
world beyond the grave. Through the poem, there is an indication of a strong influence from
Maro’s “The Aeneid,” and Augustine’s the “Confession.” The influence from the Aeneid and the
Augustine in the “Inferno,” differ from the themes, concepts, literary devices and language styles
used. Even though there is some creativity in Dante’s Hell, he mostly applied Aeneid as a policy
and excerpt from Aeneid to settle in his intentions and beliefs.
