Running Head: COMPANY ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION – L3 EDD 2
Company Selection
L3 Electron Devices (L3 EDD) is a wholly owned subsidiary of L3Harris Technologies,
Inc. (L3 Harris). L3 Harris was the outcome of a merger of equals between L3 Technologies, Inc.
and Harris Corp., earlier this year. The result was a diversified, $17B defense company poised to
break into the ranks of the main prime defense contractors (The Fly, 2019). L3 EDD is part of
the Aviation Systems segment, specializing in the designing and manufacturing of high-powered
radar and microwave emitters, specifically vacuum tubes. Located in Torrance, CA and
Williamsport, PA, the two locations together account for roughly $250M in business per year.
They offer products for military training, air and missile defense, radar for space systems, radar
for military and commercial use, TV broadcast, microwaves for scientific and medical
accelerator applications, as well as commercial products for industrial heating (L3Harris
Technologies, 2019).
Using publicly available information, as well as interviews with the Director of Sales and
Marketing at the Williamsport Location, Mr. Mark Strohecker, the Director of Finance, Mr.
William Fulton, and the Engineering Manager and Senior Scientist, Dr. Michael Worthington, a
SWOT chart will be created, followed by a breakdown of the critical success factors (CSFs). The
SWOT analysis will aid in identifying “internal strengths and weaknesses and its external
opportunities and threats,” (Blocher, Stout, Juras, & Smith, 2019). An in-depth discussion of
both the SWOT and CSFs will follow, to discuss the selected factors and why they are
significant to the division. Finally, the general health and success of EDD will be explored.
