Production-Product Matrix
Production strategy will usually incorporate the decision categories as well as the
competitive priorities. A competitive priority can be expressed as a certain number of goals for
manufacturing which are used to make sure the business strategy and needs of the market are
both met by the manufacturing task. While a decision category will be used to classify the
decisions that need to be made to provide the firm with driven priorities. The most effective link
between the production function and the need of the markets is referred as the process choice,
Hayes and Wheelwright created the product-production matrix to help managers in assembling
the adequate production system and developing the process choice. They suggested that the
production systems should be placed diagonally within the matrix to allow an ideal match
between volumes in production and a suitable production system.
