Impact Of Cultural Diversity On Society
Society is a group of human beings who are broadly distinguished from other groups by
their mutual interests, involvement in quality relationships, shared institutions and a
common culture.Culture consists of the beliefs, behaviors, objects, and other
characteristics common to the members of a particular group or society. Society and
culture are interconnected with each other. Through culture, people and groups tend to
define themselves, their values, and play a positive role towards the development of
society.
“Our rich diversity . . . is our collective strength.” (Johannesburg Declaration, 2002)
Cultural diversity is a historical and present-day reality of society. Cultural diversity is the
variety of cultures or societies in a particular region, or in all over the world. Japan, China
and South Korea are examples of monoculturalism. The only substitute to multiculturalism
is incorporation into monoculturalism and this concept is unattainable as well as self
destructive in nature. It is unachievable because there is no part of Earth where
monoculturalism exists and it is self-destructive because it can exist only under complete
dictatorship. The results are never positive in the parts of the world where monoculturalism
is made a government policy. For example, During China’s Cultural Revolution, the entire
nation wore the uncomfortable grey Mao suits and the fundamental destruction of
historical icons. Monoculturalism is an extreme attitude born from the mistaken attitude
that culture can be strictly defined and controlled. On the other hand,
multiculturalismrespects cultural variations rather than requiring that the dominant
culture take in the other cultures which are being practiced in a specific region. Certain
