Mexican Border Controls
It is no secret that Mexico is known for its high profile drug lords, and drug smuggling
over the United States border. Mexico is not the only one to blame as the United States
should also share the blame for eliciting drugs across the same border. The U.S. anti-drug
policies have failed, noting that clearly, what we have been doing has not worked and it is
unfair for our incapacity to be creating a situation where people are holding the Mexican
government and people responsible. America’s insatiable consumer demand for illicit
drugs and the constant flow of our guns, which arm the cartels. Others believe that
Mexico’s own government is ineffective in controlling the trade of the drug cartels because
of rampant corruption in law enforcement in the country.
The U.S. Congress, unable to ignore the rising violence spilling over the border, has
approved $700 million in security aid for Mexico, and has promised hundreds of federal
agents and intelligence analysts devoted to the problem. Obviously both the United States
and Mexico have border control issues when it comes to drug trafficking. I think there
needs to be harsher border control measures put in place. I saw somewhere that said
President Obama has given money to aid Mexico in stopping the drug trafficking which is
going to be used for war helicopters. I know most people would see that and think that’s
not a lot, but I think every little bit helps in stopping this problem. Both countries need to
take responsibility and work together and figure out a solution.
