The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and
Immigration Modernization Act of 2013(S.744)
The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of
2013(S.744) was introduced to the United States Senate of the United States Congress on April
16, 2013.This bill was created by a bipartisan group of 8 United States Senators. These Senators
are frequently referred to as the “Ganged of 8”.Their names are Michael Bennet, Dick Durbin,
Je5 Flakes, Lindsey Graham, John McCain, Bob Mendez, Marco Rubio, and Chuck Schumer. On
April 16, 2013 Chuck Schumer was the senator that introduced (S.744) to the congress. (S.744)
was voted out when the first introduced it to congress but on June 27 2013 the bill passed with
a 68-32. (S.744).This bill would make a path for illegal immigrates to become legal in the United
States, and eventually these immigrants could become citizens. This bill also would add up to
40,000 border patrol workers and strengthen the border between Mexico and The United
States. It also has a proposal for a new visa called the W visa that would replace the H-1B Visa
program so that misuse of green cards does not occur. All employers would also be required to
use e-verify. With the approval of this bill the United State’s wages would increase and the U.S
:scal deficit would dramatically decrease.
If (S-744) were to pass an Illegal immigrant would have to prove that they lived in the
United States from December 31, 2011 to the time they apply for legal residency. The immigrant
would first have to pay a 500 dollar fee and an application fee along with taxes. If an immigrant
has been convicted of a felony or has three or more misdemeanors then the person will not be
able to become a legal resident. Once approved to become legal a person can work in USA as

well as Travel outside the United States. If the person that applies for (S-744) gets approved
then their children and spouse would automatically become legal as well, as long as the could
prove that they have also lived In the USA since December 31, 2011.A approved immigrant
would be considered to be in Registered Provisional immigrant (RPI) status because they would
have to apply to get legal residency every year for ten years. ACer ten years as a RPI a person
can change to a Lawful Permanent Resident if the have paid all their taxes in those ten year ,
