Professor Sassower Women’s Images: Then and Now Shelby DiDonato
Part 1:
In Chapter 2 of “Ways of Seeing,” John Berger uses collages of women to express a
story. The first two pages display an image of a very ordinary working woman. In the
background are several pictures on the wall of glamorized women who steal your eye. The next
is a woman in a vehicle wearing a short dress who seems to be trying to escape the judgmental
gaze of onlookers. Next, there is an image of two mannequins who are very skinny and beautiful.
The next photo is a woman being taunted by three men, one of which is stepping on her dress as
she walks away. These images seem to display women’s image being objectified. The women do
not yet seem to be enraptured in anxiously striving for that beauty, but the expectation exists.
The next two pages are much more seductive as a sexual nature seems to have entered.
