1. (15%) Juanita is an amateur, but serious, videographer—she creates videos and
films for clients. She is in the market for a new computer and would like your advice on
whether to purchase a desktop or a laptop.
A. Is a desktop the right choice for her business or should it be a laptop? Justify your
choice by comparing the pros and cons of each.
If I were Juanita, I would opt for a high-performance laptop over a desktop. Since she is
a videographer, she would have to meet clients often and would need a portable
personal computer. Although a desktop computer would probably be cheaper, she
would need a very high-performance graphics card, which can get pricey, especially in
laptops. If money was not too much of an issue, she should get a laptop: especially if
she wants to be a serious videographer.
B. What operating system would you recommend? Why?
I would highly recommend Windows 8 as an operating system. In my own personal
experiences, I wish I would have bought the latest and greatest laptop, because
technology becomes obsolete very quickly! If you want to take your videographing
seriously, you should use the newest operating system as well so you won’t have to
upgrade after a year or so.
C. Suggest two application software programs relevant to her business and explain why
they are important.
Two programs that I would recommend are Adobe Premier Pro CC and Microsoft Office
2013. Adobe Premier is the latest and greatest in video editing software, which has free
updates to the software when the need arises. Microsoft Office will enable Juanita to
type up a business ledger on Excel or write Business letters to her clients via Microsoft
Word.
D. In addition to the computer, suggest three additional peripherals that would be
important to her business. She already owns a camera.
Three additional peripherals that would be important for Juanita to have are a multi-
function printer, a large external hard drive, and a surge protector
E. Rank your recommendations in terms of importance.
Recommendations have been ranked in terms of importance.
2. (10%) You have been asked by a relative to help him start using the Internet for the
first time. You want to help this beginner but you must be careful not to overwhelm him
with too much information.
A. What are five functions this beginner must know in order to understand how to
access the Internet?
B. Describe each function. Explain why these functions are important first steps in
learning to use the Internet.
C. For each function, provide the step-by-step instructions the new user will need to
practice the function.
Five functions that a beginner must know are internet service providers, web-browsing,
email, search engines, and social networking.
Internet service providers – A beginner to the internet must first know how to equip his
household with internet service. Internet service providers for a person’s area can be
found in the phone book. In order to connect to the internet, one of these providers must
