1)I am going to be writing my reflection paper on the short story “Space Traders”, by
Derrick Bell. I decided to write my paper on this short story because it was my favorite, as
well as the story that made me think the most out of the whole book by Bell. The story was
great on its own and after you showed us the movie in class, it gave me a much better
interpretation of everything.
“Space Traders” takes place in 2000 and is about an alien race coming to visit Earth. When
they get to earth, they tell the American people that they have the ability to end all of the
problems we are facing, such as the collapsing economy, pollution problems, and just
restoring everything to what is was before we ruined everything. In trade for helping the
people of earth, they want to take all the people who are considered black back with them
to space. Once told, the people of earth were shocked of what was offered. World leaders
then come together to discuss the proposal the aliens gave and came to agreement to have
a vote amongst the people to see if they choose to trade African Americans for all
problems to be fixed, or to keep everything the way it is. They had a week to come up with
their answer and the people of earth eventually made the choice to trade all of the blacks
for a better Earth.
