Sexual Orientation Problems with Today’s Society.
The matter of sexual orientation in today’s society is a prominent issue that
unfortunately causes real problems in people’s lives. According to Steve R. in his article
published on June 12, 2016, in the Miami Herald’s newspaper the criminal murdered 49 people
in total and left 53 wounded inside a gay bar located in Orlando, Florida. Days after an
evangelical church pastor exclaimed in one of his sermons that he believed that this event had
been very helpful, and the only tragedy was that the criminal did not kill all the gay men in that
place. The research and the statistics held by Gary J. Gates in his thesis about how many people
are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender submitted in the University of California (2011)
illustrates that there is a 7.3% of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population in the
United States of America. Individuals who identify as a member of the lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender or the LGBTQ+ community face millions of comments like this daily, actually
there are places in the world where people who do not share the same sexual orientation as the
rest of the world can be physically attacked, causing them to suffer because of discrimination,
assault, hatred, and a barrage of other controversaries. These issues caused by the intolerance
for someone’s sexual orientation can also bring mental health problems to those facing them,
and most of the time it comes from the individual’s closest groups such as religious circles,
peers, and family. For this reason, it is important for individuals and the government to work

together in order to avoid this entire senseless hatred that some persons are still having in our
time.
Many of the LGBTQ+ people face discrimination or even excommunication from their
closest relationships with others, even their families. For instance, religion is the center of one’s
self-worth and value. The amount of time and faith put into an organization that one has been
part of for a majority of their lives brings great value to them. We can use my own experience
as an example of how religion and family and/or peers can affect your emotional well-being;
since I was born I have been a part of a religious group, they have taught me about the Bible,
the sins, the good and evil and various other. My father is a church’s pastor, and because of
religion he cannot accept that his own son is homosexual, he says that being gay goes against
the norms of the church, which is quite contradictory for the fact that the church is supposed to
teach you to love your neighbor, but then they reject us because in the Bible it is said that
