Mr. Badheart is age 43-year-old and a male with a history of hypertension. Under
medication his hypertension has remained stable. He works in construction and has smoked one
and a half packs of cigarettes per day for the last 25 years. His father died of a heart attack at age
60 proving it maybe hereditary. A physical exam recently completed by Mr. Badheart’s primary
care physician shows he is the height 5’8″and has a weight of 176lbs, but possess no other signs
or symptoms of cardiorespiratory disease. Blood tests reveal a total cholesterol of 8 mmol/L and
a fasting glucose of 5.4 mmol/L.
A plan to set in motion for Mr. Badheart includes a regular exercise regimen, stopping
smoking or at least reducing smoking, and a continuation of his medication and a health diet. I
believe the patient would greatly benefit from 30 minutes of exercise specifically aerobic
exercise at least 3-5 times a week. I would advise him to use lower intensity to moderate
intensity about 50% VO2max during his exercises to prevent him from straining himself while
reducing his blood pressure.
