1. Why is this group a team?
Tom Andrews, Cy Crane, Marge Dector and Megan Harris are said to be in a team as their
group orientation is characterized by a flexibility and openness in their work relationship.
There exists increased cooperation towards each other. One basis for this answer is that
they follow the collegial model of organizational behaviour. Each of the members creates
an interdependence among each other as a product of partnership and teamwork.
Furthermore, the term team has been defined as a coordinated and cooperative small group
which is in constant communication with each other. The strong communication that exists
among members and the purpose with which they exist differs them from committees and
a project-based team as they a have a purpose which lasts indefinitely and a more
unbounded and organic communication lines than committees. Aside from that, the output
of the group is measured collectively and not individually. Performance is monitored by
another team member who is usually the team leader. The task is not delegated or does not
operate on the basis of specialization but operates through problem-solving where the most
capable initiates to solve the team’s dilemma. Hence, leadership becomes shared through
this orientation of role distribution. Further more, conflict is encouraged and functional.
Since the team does not conduct its meetings in physical space, they are called a virtual
team. Virtual teams are usually composed of members of differentiated geography.
Through the use of technology, they are able to conduct meetings even without their
physical presence. This characteristic enables the team to work with more flexibility and
freedom. Thus, these characteristics enable the group to be considered as a task team not
only in name but also in its essence.
2. What characteristics of the team predispose it to making ineffective decisions?
There are several characteristics which caused the ineffective decision of the team. These
characteristics exist on the part of the management and also with the team.
First, on the part of the management, it tried to motivate their employees through the
custodial model rather than the use of the collegial model. The custodial model is
dependent in the application of money and other economic resources as a means to
motivate employee performance. Thus, it tries to make the employee more dependent with
the organization through its dispensation of material resources to the workers. However,
