Human resource management is the set of formal systems within an organization that have
been created to handle the management of its people. Typically, within each organization,
there is a department called ‘Human Resources’ that handles the functions of human
resource management including finding and hiring employees, coordinating the departure
of employees, helping employees grow and learn, and managing employee benefits.
The most obvious value provided by human resource management is that organizations
typically operate more efficiently due to employees performing more effectively and
satisfactorily while at work. Other departments directly focus mainly on profitability and
the company’s bottom line, but human resource management plays a key role in both of
those metrics by maintaining a workforce that feels motivated to produce excellent work.
My experience working with human resource staff has been a relatively pleasant one. I
have had the opportunity to work for both large and small companies, and because of this,
have noticed many differences between the human resources departments. My
observations of the different size companies showed more structure and organization in the
larger companies, but more personalized service and relationships in the smaller
companies. Where the policies and guidelines were stricter in the larger companies, the
smaller companies afforded more leeway when it came to time off, sick days, and general
office conduct. My personal preference is to work in smaller companies with the smaller,
less organized human resources departments due to the number of hours spent at work
every day and the hard work that I put forth while at work. The smaller human resources
department, I feel, help my hard work be better recognized
