Talking Points for Diversity
1. So we have established that our nation is diverse by looking at statistics, but how
did we get to be so diverse? That began long before the founding of the United
States and even before the Pilgrims and the mayower. Next Slide
2. What we refer to as Native Americans were already in America before the arrival of
Europeans. These Native Americans were not all the same and were a diverse

3. Most immigrants were from the British Isles, but many nations sent immigrants to
establish colonies. Read from slide text
4. Many nations sought to colonize America in there own name. They all sent support
to their colonies in many ways but in the end these people banded together to form
their own government, the government we have today. This government maintained
a very free immigration policy, but over time, restrictions to immigration were
developed. Read from slide text.
5. However, some of the people here did not come of there own free will and were not
Natives to the land. Those were slaves, brought by slave traders to work in
America. Read from slide text
6. These charts show the effect of immigration and population growth on America’s
diversity. Currently whites make up the majority at 73 percent, with Asians at 4 ,
blacks 12 and Hispanics 11. But as we project to 2050 we see that the Asian and
Hispanic groups have doubled, with the blacks gaining 2 and the whites dropping to
53. All this really means is that we can look forward to a much more diverse county.
