Case study 9.1: The Web Page Fiasco
So our first study case is briefly summarized in these 3 pictures below. So first of all we have
our very Jack Monroe, who is the Director of Marketing at Minor Motors, a company producing
hybrid vehicles and focuses on the designs of the products. However, recently, according to
the company’s clients, it seems that Minor Motors is running behind big guys like Google or
Tesla in innovating its products. The problem has been issued several times in the annual
meetings but the CEOs of the company, Dean and Hugh have been ignorant of the problem
and appeared to drag about the stuff. Jack and his assistant Doris really questioned the thing,
and they agreed they need to come up with the answer.
Suggested Answer: Students’ answers will vary. Hugh and Dean, the two senior partners in
the company, maybe finding the status quo just too comfortable. They may be feeling more
secure in knowing exactly what they are going to do each day. The other common reasons for
resisting change are related to either fear or insecurity. Those are the two common
denominators that seem to unite people who resist organizational change.
Suggested Answer: Students’ answers will vary. Hugh and Dean may be delaying the progress
on the company’s Research and Development into the new driverless technology due to the
fear of unknown. Fear of the unknown does overwhelm some peopleand often becomes a
major barrier to organization-wide change.
Jack and Doris should involve Hugh and Dean in a dialogue. Hugh and Dean should be
convinced about the benefits of the new technology. As mentioned in the force field analysis
model, Jack and Doris can involve more employees who think that developing the new
driverless technology will be beneficial for the company. By eliminating the many factors that
keep change from happening, Jack and Doris can convince Hugh and Dean to implement the
