Which creature is it?
The “only one creature that has carved a life for itself in every in every habitat on earth,”
are humans.
2.) What are the men in Galicia, Spain looking for? When is the only time they can do this? Why
do this risky work?
The men in Galicia, Spain are searching for goose barnacles that cling to bottom of cliffs
along the coast. The only time they can collect them is during low tide. People do this
work because goose barnacles are prized delicacy that can be sold for 200 Euros per
kilogram.
3.) What do people in Laguna, Brazil do with dolphins? Who benefits?
The people of Laguna, Brazil fish alongside the dolphins since they cannot see the mullet
fish in the murky waters. The dolphins drive the mullet fish towards the fishermen and
even signal when the best time to cast their nets. The fishermen are able to easily gather
fish this way and reap the rewards. The dolphins although able to locate the fish through
echolocation, cannot differentiate the lager fish in the school. By helping the fishermen,
they can break the formation of the school and pick off individual fish.
4.) In Papua New Guinea, what is Blaise the “sorcerer of the sea,” doing with the wreath of
coconut shells?
In Papua New Guinea, Blaise, the “sorcerer of the sea,” is using a wreath of coconuts to
shake in the water to mimic the vibrations and sounds of fish feeding in order to entice a
shark to its location.
