AVIA: Human Factors
Midterm Essay
3/17/2017
Human factors is everything about the human behavior and performance applied
to aviation operations. It is mainly known and used to enhance the relation between
people and the systems to work properly. In the Human Factors in Aviation book by
Eduardo Salas, we can understand deeper this behavior of the human in aviation. On
the first chapter from this book, we learned that the history of human factors in aviation
can be distinguish and characterized by the progress that has been made and the
opportunities to solve things in the future; moreover, it helps the readers to understand
the causes and effects that human factors have in aviation field now.
Aviation has grown enormously throughout the years thanks to the new technologies,
operations and organizations that all of the people in aviation has contributed to but,
unfortunately this growth has not been as fast as it should be. For several decades
airplanes have been known for being the most reliable way of transportation, however,
safety and the efficiency of operations have grown slowly compared with the new
technologies but, “as each improvement took effect, aviation slowly gained more
accessibility and thus began to grow”.
Overall, in this chapter and the following chapters are pretend to state how human
factors is developed it in the aviation industry and what are others perspectives in
aviation such as safety, behavior and so on that help to the improvement.

In the following chapters we learned the meaning of the word system explained by Tom
Sheridan and what it implies for construction, design, operations and research in
aviation, especially emphaticizing to the human role in aviation; he also describes a
different perspective of a relevant number of models using information, decision making
and reliability (Helmrecih). Along with this Mrs. Pritchett intends to contribute in the
system perspective emphasizing in the consideration of safety as a function of risk;
moreover, she uses a collision design which it shows how the errors, risks and failures
contributes to the construction of an operation environment and how can help to the use
of the system safety. Also, in aviation, systems can be defined as a whole complex in
where it just can be understand by its human participants (Helmrecih).
As we have been discussing, safety is on the eye of every person that is linked with
