In the article “Does Barbie Make Girls Want to Be Thin? The Effect of Experimental Exposure to
Images of Dolls on the Body Image of 5- to 8-Year-Old Girls,” the author explains how the
infamous Barbie doll toy can have a lasting effect on young girls and their perspective on body
image. The Barbie doll has body proportions that are very unhealthy and unrealistic. Often
young girls express that the Barbie doll is their goal in life. The specific study that was explained
throughout the article originated because of the term, body dissatisfaction. Body dissatisfaction
can lead to negative opinions about one’s self and disordered eating. Short term exposure has
even resulted to girls engaging in body dissatisfaction. Research proves that Barbie dolls do
influence body image in children, teenage girls, and even adult women.
