Chase Diekrager Chapter 9 Homework 3/15/2020
1) The biggest issue I see with this branch of Burger Boy is that it is extremely
understaffed. I have never worked in fast food before but I’m fairly sure that these kinds
of jobs should have a plethora of employees. Either on the job or at home. This would
give management a little bit of slack being able to call people in and fill other positions
on the job that are otherwise empty. Like the author states, it takes around 13 people to
run the restaurant at max efficiency. They only had 8 at the time. This meant that people
who were working the sandwich assembly were forced to do other jobs like run the drive-
thru window and man the cash register. This causes much more stress then needed on the
workers. Not only do they barely have enough time to get their own job in order, but they
also must manage another task they might not know as well. This over encumber some
amount of work causes un-needed amounts of stress which lead to other work-related
issues. The overall morale of this Burger Boy is on a downward trend.
2) I feel that many of the Burger Boys’ issues could be traced to compensation. Most
importantly I think about the manager Otis. Due to the fact that he is an exempt
employee, meaning he cannot receive overtime pay. Otis states he works 50-60 hours a
week with no overtime. This is a huge factor when contemplating Otis’s frustration with
his job and employees. As the book has stated in previous chapters, compensation is the
leading factor when it comes to employees being satisfied with their jobs, and it seems
obvious that Otis is not satisfied. If Otis where to be compensated more for his work or
was allowed overtime pay perhaps his outlook on the job would be better and perhaps, he
would feel more compelled to give compliments like he did to Jerry. I think while on the
job people often overlook the meaning of a compliment like, “Good job.” It doesn’t take
much to say but the outcomes are more often than not positive.
3) Rewards that do not include monetary value could be a great way to increase the
overall attitude of this particular Burger Boy. Like in question number 2, recognition
would be the first step to helping the employees feel better about their jobs and the
service they are providing for others. I think just a simple thing that would make a
