The Climate for Doing Business in Indonesia and Germany Today
Indonesia is located along the equator and it’s a tropical environment. In December of
2012, 200,000 acres of carbon-rich land were put aside by the government for perpetual
conservation to avoid the release of greenhouse gases. Due to international pressure, the world’s
third largest paper manufacturer, Asia Pulp and Paper Company, promised to end their practices
of logging in natural rainforests in Indonesia in February 2013. But, other companies haven’t
made that commitment. In June 2013, extensive forest fires started on the island of Sumatra. This
forest fire resulted in broad air pollution that moved to Malaysia and Singapore with the air
quality meeting dangerous levels. Even though the president of Indonesian apologized to the
nearby countries, this event highlighted the continuous challenges of managing a fast growing
market while conserving the natural environment at the same time. Germany is trailing the
