In what ways can diverse employees contribute to Wegmans’ business performance?
Recent research has found that firm performance increases when employees have
more positive attitudes toward diversity. Diversity contributes to a firm’s competitive
advantage when it enables all employees to contribute their full talents and motivation to
the company. The primary motivation for effectively managing diversity is the fact that
doing so brings out the best in all employees, allowing each of them to contribute
maximally to the firm’s performance in an increasingly competitive business
environment. Griffin, R. W., Phillips, J. M, & Gully S. M. (2020)
What types of diversity do you think Wegmans should focus on? Why?
Deep level diversity is what Wegmans should focus on. Deep level diversity is individual
differences that cannot be seen directly, including goals, values, personalities, decision
making styles, knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes. These “invisible” characteristics
in others take more time to learn about but can have stronger effects on group and
organizational performance than surface-level characteristics. Pay differences in a
group and differences in rank or power can affect group processes and performance.
