How to Greet a Walk in Customer
Typically when a customer walks into a store your first instinct is to greet them with
respect and make them feel welcome because they are in the store to get something.
If you are working for a business you always need to make sure you are dressed
professionally and you use professional language at all times. No matter what or
where you are at in the store make sure you make the customer you know they are
there and make them feel welcomed. If you are busy putting away something or
taking something to the back stop what you are doing and let the customer know
that they are first.
First when a customer comes in and the salesman normally will greet them at the
door and with a smile and a “hello, how are you?” Normally the customer gives back,
“I’m fine, how are you?” Let the customer know about any specials, sales, and deals
taking place during the week or the day. You can always ask them if they need any
help and if they do not need any help let them know you are still around and let
them know your name. It always helps a customer out by knowing their sales
persons name. They know they can call them up on the phone or go in the store and
ask them questions by name and they may feel like they have made a trust bond.
If the salesman is good then he or she will make conversation and ask more
questions. For example, “are you looking for anything in particular today that I could
help you with?” “That weather sure is pretty outside today” or that weather sure is
hot outside.” If the salesman plans to talk about the weather he or she should keep it
interesting. Even if the customer needs help with a product when they come through
the door then the salesman needs to tell them about that product politely and
professionally. Even if a customer is rude it is not the salesman’s responsibly to be
