HOW TECHNOLOGY AFFECTS OUR YOUTH 2
The definition of technology is “the application of scientific knowledge for practical
purposes” which youths now have taken way into context. Generations Y and Z, born from 1981
and on, have been greatly impacted by technology. Early youths of generation Y have
experienced many “firsts” in the industry like cell phones and music devices. Many of course did
not have or use anything beyond a computer but having that first experience made them 70%
more likely to have them as adults and 50% more likely to give devices to their children. This
definitely shows when in a 2017 study %100 of people ages 18 to 29 own a cell phone with 92%
owning smartphones and 73% of children ages 12 to 17 have or have access to a device.
Obviously with these statistics, technology has innovated children’s education and
communication however exposure to adult content, decreased attention span, and changes in
behavior has negatively affected them as well.
