How is an individual's ethical character connected to the political order of a society
in Confucian thought?
- To simply start off my answer I will cite Confucian in how when he states that “If
the people be led by laws, and uniformity among them be sought by punishments,
they will try to escape punishment and have no sense of shame. If they are led by
virtue, and uniformity sought among them through the practice of ritual propriety,
they will possess a sense of shame and come to you of their own accord”. In this
very noble statement, Confucius is trying to implement the need for people to be
led by something moral and that his philosophy on politics deals with the ruler
being a ruler, and yet doing what’s best and in the right interest of his people which
clearly roots to how the person’s ethical character is. Because someone who takes
control that was raised with the thought of power will ultimately become someone
who thinks mostly for himself instead of someone who is looking out for the whole
community’s interests/needs. In his thought a ruler needs many assets of being
