How important Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs in understanding the self?
Maslow’s statement pertains to self-actualization, the ultimate level or stage in his Hierarchy of Needs
model of human motivation. Self-actualization, according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, is the highest-
order motivator, driving us to attain our true potential and become our ideal selves. Maslow’s hierarchy
of needs is concerned about the human motivation, it is all about understanding what people need and
how people’s needs differ. And from what I’ve learned, if the lower need is not fulfilled then the higher
ones will be ignored. You got to apply these needs in yourself in order to motivate yourself. We need to
have those needs for us to provide ourselves those physiological needs, because as we grow older we
need our own shelter, our own needs as we live. By complying those first we have to think of our desire
on what we want to become. We have to gain an esteem, basically, self-esteem, also respect. Moreover,
the intimacy or the love we have with our family or friends. Our safety needs, our self-securement, our
health and property, or dignity. We need these needs in order for us to achieve all the needs in the
Maslow’s hierarchy. And to become an independent person. This also helps us or gives us idea in
understanding our own self, because it gradually teaches us to become more capable of doing
independently, by not depending others. We can know our self-more through these hierarchy because it
also serves as our guide in the path we are going. We can understand ourselves more after learning
these needs. It accommodates our self-satisfaction, that having these things makes it easier for people
to achieve their needs.
