It has been reported that Queen Victoria, the former Queen of England once said, “Give
my people plenty of beer, good beer, and cheap beer, and you will have no revolution
among them” ("Quotes," n.d.). There are many other examples of quotes about the
popularity of beer from historical figures such as the Greek philosopher Plato, Benjamin
Franklin, Edgar Allan Poe, and Sir. Winston Churchill to name a few.
In 2013, global beer market revenue was more than $514 billion (Global beer, 2014). With
a projected compounded annual growth rate of 3.4% between 2013 and 2018, annual
global revenue is projected to rise to more than $605 billion (Global beer, 2014). While the
desire of the masses for good inexpensive beer may or may not be reliably credited with
preventing revolution as Queen Victoria alluded to, these numbers and future projections
are evidence of beer’s popularity. Perhaps Queen Victoria was on to something.
Major International Competitors
Over the past twenty years, there has been a trend of major global brewers of
consolidation. In fact, “The world's four biggest brewing companies (AB InBev,
SABMiller, Heineken, and Carlsberg Group) now account for over half of the global beer
production” (Swinnen, 2011, p. 347).
SABMiller, the world’s second leading brewer, engages in the manufacture, distribution,
and sale of beverages. It offers beer, soft drinks, and fruit juices. In addition, it bottles soft
drinks for The Coca-Cola Company. Some of SABMiller’s better-known brands are Miller
Genuine Draft, Grolsch, Miller Lite, Snow, Tyskie, and Victoria Bitter brands. With a
portfolio of over 200 beer brands, SABMiller serves various customers in South Africa,
Colombia, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Headquartered in the Netherlands capital city of Amsterdam, Heineken’s brands and
operations are strewn around the world. In addition to its flagship brand, Heineken, other
notable brands are Amstel Light, Newcastle, Murphy’s, Fosters, Beamish, Moretti, and
Tiger Beer (Notte, 2014, p. 5).
Government Influence, Regulations, and Economics
Although the major international competitors discussed make and sell their brands in
multiple countries, the focus of this analysis will be on one of the top sellers of each
brewer, and the “home” country of that brand. For AB InBev, the focus will be on
Anheuser Busch’s Bud Light headquartered in the United States. Snow, brewed in China,
the world’s number one selling beer, will be the focus for SABMiller. Lastly, the self-titled
brand for Heineken breweries, Heineken, is brewed in the Netherlands.
