“What do I know for certain? And how do I know it?”
Dr. Mary Yarborough
11/01/17
Epistemology is knowledge justified as true belief. Everything that I believe or think I know is
directly linked to my personal experiences, witnessing the journey of others, or making sound
assumptions based on evidence. Experience and knowledge come from one’s perceptions of
looks, feelings, and sounds. While I cannot verify the accuracy of the source, one thing that I do
know for sure is that all living things go through the same cycle, though of varying lengths of
time, that ultimately ends in death.
The world we live in is full of living species, to include plants, animals, and of course humans.
Each of these species will endure a life cycle, during which they will grow in size, age, and they
may even reproduce some offspring, but they will die. Death is an unwritten expiration date that
is not only attached to perishable foods, but also to living things that will cease to exist once that
time is reached. So how do I know? From personal experiences, I have suffered the loss of a
great deal of family members during my 31 years of existence, many of whom grew older and
had children. I’ve witnessed and even claimed the life of a few deer through automobile
accidents. I have also learned about the stages of cancer and how slim the chances are for
patients diagnosed in Stage 4.
