Prep Paper #5
Humans will stop at nothing to prove they are the best, the strongest, superior, etc. Will
attack (kill) fellow human beings that get in our way.
We (humans) are our own monsters. Greed, fear, and revenge drive our actions.
Humanity shows characteristics of the “Absolute Xenophobe”. This is described as a
form of aliens that are threatened by any other intelligent species. In movies with alien
attacks it’s usually because they want to eat us, experiment on us, or drain earth of its
natural resources. In this case however, they want to annihilate us just so we’re gone.
Is there a level of monstrosity in human nature?
Ex: Frankenstein fine line between humanity and monstrosity
o Created monster because he selfishly wanted to obtain fame
o Lack of concern for consequences
o Frankenstein puts own desires above all others
o Frankenstein abandons creation because he’s ugly
o All humans the monster encounter react the same way to his physical
appearance. They are repulsed.
o Because of that treatment, the monster is born.
