SUBJECT: Homogeneous or Heterogeneous? Why not both?
In business, homogeneous and heterogeneous both have differences and commonalities, they
both have strengths and weaknesses. Depending on what kind of business you are running, the
question of homogenous or heterogeneous can be different. This memorandum aims to help
clarify homogenous and heterogeneous groups and products and help answer the question of
whether business is homogenous, heterogenous or both.
Homogeneous
In business, homogenous is having a group that are alike, interchangeable, or uniform.
Homogenous teams, within businesses, are made up of people from the same race, gender, social
background and age. This can lead to providing with equal access and participation from its
members and there are low chances for exclusion because of their similarities. Members in
homogenous teams can understand other’s verbal and nonverbal communications and can lead to
very little misunderstandings and help speed up the work process. The downside of homogenous
teams come from the definition itself. Homogenous teams lack diversification and can stifle
creativity and can lead to feelings of exclusion to minorities, be those racial or gender.
Heterogeneous
