ThechildsurvivorsoftheHolocaustsufferedunprecedentedmassivetraumafromtheir
timeintheconcentrationcamps.Idecidedtoresearchthelongtermpsychologicaleffectsthat
wereleftamongstsomanyofthosethatsurvivedthehorrorsofthecamps.Asachild
developmentmajor,Iamcurrentlystudyingtheimportanceofsafety,healthandtheroleof
parents.Iwantedtothenresearchhowchildsurvivorswereabletoliveandraisetheiryouth
afterhavingtoenduresuchahorriblechildhood.Ifoundthatwhilemanyofthesurvivors
sufferedfromdepression,anxiety,andposttraumaticstressdisorder,surprisinglymanywere
resilientandabletomoveforwardandliveincrediblelives.
Thosekidsthatlivedintheghettosdiedfromstarvationandexposuretoillnessaswellas
alackofcleanwaterandadequateclothingandshelter.Thechildrenwerenotshownanymercy
fromtheNazisoldiersanddescribedtheyouthasunproductiveand“uselesseaters.”
Resistancewasnotjustafactorthatadultsusedtodefythegermanauthoritybutwas
incrediblyaformofpowerthatkidsusedinordertosurvivetheghettos.Childrenriskedso

GermanNazismurderedalmost1.5millionchildrenincludingthousandsofgypsy

course,thatpromisewasneverkept.Iconnectedthisstorytothediscussionsinclassabout

ofwomenhavingtheirinfantsdrownedinordertosavethemfromthepossiblehorrorsthat

itisthemostinfluentialtraumasinthehistoryofnotonlythejewishpeoplebuttheworld. 
Withallthatthechildrensufferedthroughwhilelivinginthecamps,ghettos.orbeingin
