1. Compare and contrast the Chinese meaning of life and way of thinking with the
Western meaning of life and way of thinking. Include information about Buddism,
Confucianism, and Taoism in your discussion.
The Chinese view the universe as a vast, indivisible entity and each being has a
function within it. Everything in life is considered to relate to each other, so one
cannot exist without the other. There always needs to be a balance of harmony. On
the spiritual level, Asians believe that one must adapt to nature and health is viewed
as an approach of life. Westerns typically take a scientific approach on health care
and life while focusing more on diagnosing and treating the illness.
Buddhism teaches harmony and is nonconfrontational. There is a respect for life and
individualism is devalued. Self-discipline and patience are also important.
Confucianism teaches the achievement of harmony through observing five basic
hierarchical roles and relationships of society. Taoism teaches harmony between
humans and nature, charity, happiness, and a long life.
