Based on the U.S. Center for Disease Control studies, as of 2013 blacks experienced the
largest number of new HIV and AIDS cases while whites and Hispanics respectively, were
the second and third largest groups to experience new HIV and AIDS cases although these
two ethnic groups are the largest and second largest ethnic groups, respectively in the U.S.
[3] In addition, Whites and Hispanics experienced new HIV and AIDS cases at almost a
1/3 the rate that of Blacks. [3]
Although the CDC has identified the main mode of transmission of HIV to be male to
male sexual contact with heterosexual female to male transmission being the second
largest mode of transmission. [3]
Women have been infected with HIV since the beginning of the HIV epidemic in 1985 and
as of 2010, 84% of women being infected with HIV were infected through heterosexual
contact. [11] However, in 2010 black women were being infected at 20 times the rate of
White women but overall black women are still being infected at a lower rate than that of
black gay men. [11]
Through the review of information it is clearly intimated that external factors such as
socioeconomic status, education, underemployment and unemployment are affecting the
rate of HIV infection among blacks in the U.S.
Among the racial/ethnic groups reviewed, 26% of Whites , 25% of Blacks, 19% of
Hispanics and 15% of Asians graduated from High School. [9] Among these same groups,
