Talk it Out: The Transatlantic Slave Trade
1. What do the maps indicate about the transatlantic slave trade? What is the most
interesting fact you learned by looking at the maps? According to the map in the beginning,
from 1500 to 1900, approximately 8,000,000 slaves were taken to the United States, Cuba,
St. Dominguez, Jamaica, Veracruz, Barbados, Cartagena, Brazil, Rio de Plata and Europe
from may parts of Africa, but a grand majority was from West central Africa. Starting later
on, from 170 to 1900, slaves were being moved from Africa to nearer places like: Egypt,
Libya, Tunisia and Morocco. Also, during this years and the shorter lengths of the trips the
slave numbers were reduce to approximately 1,000,000 to 2,000,000.
The most interesting thing I learned from the maps was that before looking at the maps I had
no idea that the African slaves were taken to many destinations and I also learned were all
the important trading places were during this times.
2. Compare and contrast the accounts of Thomas Philipps, Mungo Park, and Olauda
Equiano. Which specific pieces of information are similar in each account? Which are
notably different? I found that the four readings were very different but very similar at the
