Did London need to know when a new colony was formed? At rst, no, but they would nd out because
they traded with each.
The New York Colony is a dutch colony. How did New Amsterdam become New York City? The British
eventually get ahold of it (1674), and name it a(er the Duke of York. New Jersey is a piece of land right
across the river from New York city. They named the colony a(er an island o, the coast of Great Britain.
The next huge powerhouse colony, besides Virginia and Massachuse1s, is going to be the Pennsylvania
Colony. It got established because some of the people in the two Jerseys walk out. It gets established as
a safe haven for Quakers and all others (probably the most persecuted religious group of all at the time).
They say ANYONE can come and se1le. This is why a lot of what becomes the U.S. is based o, of things
that happened in Philadelphia (direct meaning: the city of brotherly love). Philadelphia becomes the
political headquarters of the founding nation. William Penn founds Pennsylvania with the Charter of
Liber&es.
Maryland kind of mimics the Pennsylvania colony in that it will be a Religious colony for the Catholics,
but they also let anyone in that wants to live here. This is another example of religious freedom in the
colonies. Bal&more was funded and set up by Lord Bal&more.
The Carolinas: Charleston is where they se1led down. What we see is that the Aristocrats stay down in
South Carolina whereas present day NC is where the poorer farmers went. So the King divided it into NC
and SC.
