Women in Colonial Mexico: Convents of Oppression
Life in the Spanish colonies in North America was very complicated, and featured a lot of
harsh rules and regulations that were not present in the French and British colonies to the East.
One of the best tools for understanding what it was like in this time is to look at the convents of
the Catholic Church. By doing so, you can see the strong amounts of oppression that women had
to endure during this point in time.
In this essay, I will make an argument that life in the Spanish colonies was a horrific
place for a woman. To do so, I will primarily be looking at two sources. The first source is the
film “I, The Worst of All.” Directed by Maria Luisa Bemberg in 1990, the film follows the story
