The downfall was about Adolf Hitler’s final days in his bunker in Berlin, Germany at the
end of WWII. The beginning of the film it shows his trusted guard men explaining and
predicting the lost towards Russia because they were coming in circling them to invade
Germany. Hitler refused to surrender because he did not want to seem week to his enemies, and
it would be considered a dishonorable thing to him if his troops did. There was a troop that
disobeyed him to protect themselves because they believed they did not owe him personally
loyalty; they would have rather surrendering and disobey to live. Hitler called those who
disobeyed, cowards and a disgrace to their army. It angered him so much because more of his
army realized it was not worth fighting and standing their ground that they would have rather
surrendered. The soldiers who stayed to fight and got killed; he had no pity for them because
that was what they signed up for. He wanted them to fight, including children, until the last man
was standing. Those who stayed with Hitler or obeyed his commands were brainwashed and
looked up to him. For these people, it was an honor that Hitler made promises to his “trusted
people” that they wanted to commit suicide to die for him than to get captured from the
Russians. He made his people believe that committing suicide was an honor, but to Hitler, it was
a way to make sure they do not have the opportunity to be alive and to say anything bad about
him.
Doll was shipped out to Guadalcanal during World War II after just being married to his
wife for eight days. He tells himself that he will do what he wants, listen to himself, and disobey
orders just to survive the war. The first Japanese soldier he killed was hard on him which made
him become violent. He was responsible for multiple deaths of the enemy. War made everyone
lose their minds which they had to keep together. They would look for ‘souvenirs’ that the
deceased Japanese soldiers had no choice but to leave behind. The souvenirs were either kept or
traded for alcohol which kept the C for Charlie troops sane for the night. Welsh and Doll ended
up teaming up which helped Doll manage his madness. The troops had gone to Guadalcanal not
knowing what it would be like for them. The final scene of the movie shows the reality of war.
Welsh ended up getting shot protecting Doll while trying to snap him out of zoning out when
Doll was losing his mind. Doll ends up holding him, but there is nothing he can do but continue
fighting the war and move on.
