Discussion Questions: Godbeer part 1
1. Godbeer and Taylor describe the Puritan’s, their beliefs, and their world very different from one
another. Taylor describes how the Puritans where supposed to be the purest form of
Protestants and they came to the colonies to be able to practice this pure form of religion
without any corruption or sins like that in England. Godbeer describes this community of
Puritans as having all these godly ways of life and beliefs, but yet they still suffer problems in
their religion, people going against what the church says and not always being as “pure” of a
protestant as they hoped everyone would be in the new world. Corruption and sinning was very
prominent in the Puritan community and caused problems.
2. Puritan’s viewed marriage as something that was holy and was a commitment to each other
through god between husband and wife and that sexual relations should only be performed
between husband and wife. It was stable too a healthy marriage to have sex between husband
and wife and that they both were able to experience the pleasures of sex. However outside of
marriage it was viewed as a sin and could be punished for having premarital sex. Although a lot
of people had premarital sex and this caused problems with morality, a lot of Puritan’s believed
that if they both loved one another and planned on being married, then premarital sex was not
wrong because god knew they would marry.
