The Enlightenment philosophies of human rights and government fueled revolutionary change in the
Atlantic basin aer 1776. The Atlantic revolutionary ideas caused many political changes to occur.
Political leaders inspired each other to revolt and reform new governments. This set the stage for
reforms and ideas of enlightment on human rights such as rights for woman, protection from slavery,
peaceful living conditions, and liberty for all citizens regardless of race or gender.
In the 18th and 19th century women as seen as second class citizens. They are easily forgo&en and
are limited to a life dependent on a man. The sources from “Kartini, Le&er to a Dutch friend” and “The
declaration of the rights of women” the global in,uence the western world had on the world she was
living in. Also it showed the political change that was slowing forming around the world for women to be
considered as equal citizens. Kartini says in her le&er “it was a great crime against the customs of our
land that we should be taught at all, for the custom of our country forbade girls in the strongest manner
ever to go outside of the house.” “However, save to the school and the only place of instruction of which
