1. What was meant by the term “manifest destiny”?
The term “manifest destiny” was the idea and dream to spread the idea of “republican
institutions” cross the land, West to the Pacific Ocean in the 1840’s. A term used by
John O’Sullivan in 1845 in Democratic Review publication, carried the hope of
spreading power and culture across the lands. Though the North and South politics
on slavery were called into question with several states it did not stop the expansion
we know today.
2. What were the benefits of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo for the United
States?
The benefits of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo for the United States was that it
gained land that reached the Pacific Ocean (New Mexico, Texas and California
territories) but later in 1848 when Gold was discovered in California. With new land
and settlers came the free-soil movement where settlers from every nation and
continent were flooding into California.
3. What was the Free Soil movement?
The Free Soil movement occurred after the United States compromised and
purchased the New Mexico, Texas and California territories from Mexico. With the
