Abraham Lincoln will always be remember as honest Abe and the man who saved the Union however
how much do we really know about him? Philip B. Kunhardt points out that there are a few things that
we might not know about while we are thinking of Lincoln Presidency. A prime example is that we must
remember, history is always written by the victor. Suppose that the south had won the war, how would
Abraham Lincoln be remember then? His ac’ons alone could possibly label him as a tyrant that was
unable to re-unite the union. Lets think about this for a minute, if today we had a president suspend
Habeas Corpus how would it be viewed? However, this was done by President Lincoln; many in every
state both in the south and north viewed as a tyrannical ac’on. The Emancipa‘on Proclama‘on only
served to free the blacks; it did not give them any rights except freedom, equality is a ba$le s’ll being
fought today. So we can see why Fredrick Douglass stated calling Lincoln “preeminently the white man’s
President” and American blacks “at best only his step-children.” In the end, Lincoln saved the Union and
Freed the Slaves therefore history will always remember him as a great man.
