Being a twenty-one year old black female during the Civil Rights movement of 1968 has proved
to be quite interesting! Cries for dramatic changes can be heard, even from White folks, to finally
end racial discrimination and segregation that has caused violence for years. While part of me is
thankful for their courage to support us, I cannot help but question why it has taken so long!
However, I remind myself that change takes time and I am simply happy that people are finally
finding the courage to stand up for what is right! Due to their support, it feels as though we are
on the verge of a turning point for a change that has long been awaited for. Despite the lengthy
journey still ahead of us, hope fills the air as an end is finally in sight.
Even though we can now see a light at the end of the tunnel, I think it is important to
remember where this harsh racial discrimination and segregation stemmed from and reflect. The
true beginning of these issues, in my opinion, dates back to when slavery was a way of life in the
