Whittier’s Background
The city of Whittier was founded in 1887 when a group of Quakers decided to establish a
community. (City of Whittier, 2017, Para.3) After acquiring the land, they decided to name it
after the poet John Greenleaf Whittier. (City of Whittier, 2017, Para.3) Whittier expanded
quickly and constructed many homes, shopping centers, and a town center. The town center
became known as Uptown Whittier, one of the locals favorite place to gather with friends and
family. In uptown, there is a local movie theater, small shops, and a small park. The most
convent location to open a business would be in Uptown Whittier; since many residents spend
their time strolling through the town during the evening.
