Hip-hop and Punk Rock hold an inherently stylistic divergence that makes the two genres of
music very dissimilar. Although these styles of music developed under different pretenses ultimately it is
lyrics and influences of the great Hip-hop and Punk artists that made them not so different from each
other. A deeper analysis into these two styles shows that the cultural and social roots of these music
movements had a similar upbringing and consequently similar ideologies and opinions expressed in their
music. The music and styles of the great punk bands such as NOFX, The Dead Kennedy’s, and The Clash,
as well as hip-hop legends; the Notorious B.I.G, Public Enemy, and Dr. Dre, were seen as trendsetters
and pacemakers of their respective music industries.
While there is an obvious divide between the respective genre’s, it would be incorrect to say
that they are completely dissimilar. The most obvious of differences would be the ethnicities to which
these respective genre’s cater to, punk typically being a white audience, and hip-hop catering to a black
audience. The ethnic divide is one of irony to some extent because of the socioeconomic pretenses that
influenced these genres. While many punk bands throughout the U.S. (excluding the U.K.) came from
suburban/middle class families the emotions of their songs contain much anger and bitterness directed
at materialistic things and mainstream ideals. Whereas most hip-hop artists came from impoverished
