African Hip Hop Jason Rodgers
The culture and form of art known as hip-hop is extremely influential, and versatile. As
we travel around the world with the readings and films, we begin to learn how crucial hip-hop is
to different societies. The hip-hop culture can influence the way a person dresses, thinks, talks,
and even their attitude. While at the same time hip-hop is used as a form of celebration, and
Ghana’s hip-hop group Vision in Progress (V.I.P.) is a perfect example. In their culture, they have
big carnivals to unite the community, and V.I.P. would be the emcees who would bring the crowd
to life with their rhymes, and African hip-hop tunes. The way V.I.P. turned to hip-hop as a way to
express themselves. While at the same time using hip-hop as a tool to vent their struggles, and
while hip-hop can be as versatile as a Swiss army knife it can also be as strong as an anvil. Take
V.I.P. member Prozzy for example, at his father’s funeral they decided to celebrate his life, and
everybody coming together along with mourning. So the group used their hip-hop songs to at
least for a second to cheer everybody up, while at the same time for Prozzy he was able to let his
feelings out. The hip-hop trio of V.I.P. was able to travel the world and let their voices be heard
by millions all because of hip-hop. Going to places all around the world including Europe,
this culture.
