HEALTH INFORATION MANAGER REFLECTION 2
Health Information Managers have a very important role in many facilities within the
health field. I currently work in an HIM department at a surgical center and I work directly under
the Health Information Department Director. She has held her position within this company for
almost 10 years and is filled with knowledge and experience in the HIM field. The HIM
department at my facility is responsible for managing and maintaining both the electronic and
paper records for both inpatient and outpatient procedures. The department is also responsible for
all coding of the surgical procedures, radiology, labs, and clinic visits. My director oversees all of
these processes, as well as being the Privacy Officer of the facility.
An HIM manager is responsible for communicating responsibilities and expectations
within the HIM department, as well as communicating with employees from other departments,
and administration to assure that workflow is smooth and consistent. Through my observation of
my HIM director, I was able to gain knowledge of how communication with various
personalities and job roles are not always simple. My director must approach each situation and
individual that is suitable to meet the needs at hand. For instance, my department is responsible
for assuring that all physicians dictate within a reasonable timeframe as to not delay coding. We
have many physicians who, for whatever reason, never dictate in a timely manner. As employees
of the HIM department, we will mark the record as deficient, which then allows my director to
