Hills Like White Elephants
In Ernest Hemingways’s short story, “Hills Like White Elephants,” the speaker is in third
person dialogue between a girl named Jig, and her boyfriend that is not named throughout the
story. On the surface the dialogue seems a little bit normal, but the reader should focus on
symbols that are said in the dialogue to decipher what they are talking about. This story
symbolizes the different gender roles between a man and a woman. It also displays the burden
women could carry if they were to get pregnant thus using the term white elephant.
