The Importance, the How to, and the Why
HLP: #7: Establishing and maintaining community expectations and agreements about
behavior. According to TeachingWorks.org (2021), “Teachers set and maintain community
expectations and establish classroom environments that preserve students’ dignity and autonomy,
while allowing for a productive and safe classroom community” (Works, T). Simply, this means
that teachers should set equal expectations for each of their students that are beneficial to student
understanding, learning, self-efficacy, and confidence while also keeping order in the classroom
and setting boundaries for student behavior among one another.
