Throughout the late 1900’s ethnical individual didn’t have the same status that white
Americans grew up with. In the story’s “House on Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros and
Brandy Cake by Beena Kamlani both characters reveal the struggle of being an ethnical
individual. Both the main characters in the stories endure conflict because of their ethnicity as
well as their social acceptance in society. Esperanza being Mexican in “House on Mango Street”
and Preeti being an Indian all play a role in their struggles to be excepted into society.
Sandra Cisneros in the story “House on Mango Street” shows the struggle that Esperanza
goes through while growing up. The author comes out and says, “They always told us that one
day we would move in a house, a real house that would be ours for always so we wouldn’t have
to move each year (4 Cisneros). The author throughout the whole story reveals that the
neighborhood Esperanza and her family are in is seen as a low middle-class area. Ethnic
individuals for example Esperanza’s family is not a privileged as an average white American.
Even Esperanza is shocked when they get the house on mango street and they don’t have to share
it with anyone. The author portrays to the reader of how difficult it was for ethnical individuals
to obtain their own place even though it wasn’t the house they envisioned. The perks of the
house on mango street was they owned it and didn’t rent it which showed for once they had
security which was an opportunity not many ethnical families had the chance of having. Another

example of ethnical individuals not getting their chance or opportunity when coming to America
is when Esperanza meets her first friend in the neighborhood. The author opens up the chapter
with “She says, I am the great great grand cousin of the queen of France (12 Cisneros).” The
author shows the difference in Esperanza compared to how her friend Cathy views the
neighborhood. Esperanza isn’t viewed as equal, which shows the struggle of being an ethical
individual. Cathy when talking to Esperanza explains they can only be friends for a week
because she was moving out of mango street. The reason was “neighbor good was getting bad”
which is a slap in the face to Esperanza and her family because they just moved in (13 Cisneros).
Again, this is another example of being an ethnical individual and how it’s a struggle. Esperanza
and her family have such an awful mis reputation just because of their ethnicity. As the story
