Mini AssignmentEvidence of Public Health in your life
Directions: As you go through a typical day, make note of evidence you find of all the different ways public
health influences your life for good. Some things, such as flu shots, are obvious, but try to be more broad and
creative in your thinking. You can type your answers on this worksheet and submit it on Blackboard for credit
(or you could legibly write your answers and scan it to upload to Blackboard)
In your home
When I am at home the obvious public health benefits, is water. The fact
that I don’t have worry about the pollution or water borne diseases
afflicting me or my family is amazing. This is in part because water
companies have strict guidelines in processing the water, their delivery
system is well maintained and regulated.
At school
At the campus there is evidence public health by the administration to
ensure infections are kept to a minimal. For example, with the
requirement that all students must have their meningitis shot prior to
entering school, this will create a herd immunity and it will benefit those
who opposes vaccinations.
Where you work
At my work place we have OSHA regulations that requires that will keep
track of all the chemicals that the company has. These MDSA sheets
contain all the chemicals that a container has, this in turn creates a safe
work environment and keeps you from potential toxic chemicals.
During Hurricane Harvey I saw the effect of a failing built environment.
However, once the water receded, what surprise me the most was how
fast we where able to recover. I attest this to great urban engineers and
to minimal was short of a miracle.
remembered how the lake smelled terrible and it was a total cesspool.
However, during the 80’s the city of Chicago made a great effort to clean
pristine it looked. So, I can say that mankind can make an impact in the
environment either way, and when we want it can be a positive one.
respect that it deserves. We American take for granted that our,
vegetables, and canned food are safe for consumption without a second
taught. However, there was time in which people died of food poisoning
because there was no government regulation to control nor inspect the
food we ate.
