Health Care issues and Trends
The health care issue I’ll be discussing is the lack of health care provided for autism, Autism, or
autism spectrum disorder, refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges
with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by
unique strengths and differences. We now know that there is not one autism but many types,
caused by a combination of genetic and environmental influences. I picked this topic because
I’ve worked with children’s with autism and it saddens me to know after a certain age programs
stop and resources are no longer available. I think that people that suffer from this disorder
should have health care resources despite of age and insurance coverage.
In fact, families caring for a loved one with autism often have health insurance, but most of
these plans explicitly exclude coverage of the treatments their family needs. Since 2007, Autism
Speaks has been working with grassroots partners on autism insurance reform in states across
the country with the goal of enacting legislation that would end marketplace discrimination on
